FLORENCE | ALABAMA | 2016
Last summer on heels of Billy Reid’s 7th annual Shindig, we got a phone call from an old friend, Alexander Koeffler. Alex lives in Austin, TX and was on his way to Memphis and Holly Springs, MS to begin filming for his documentary on bluesman, Cedric Burnside. He wanted Mason + Dixon to come photograph Cedric while they filmed. Alex specifically asked if we had any Billy Reid pieces we could style Cedric in for some of the promotional pieces. Ironically, Paul had a suitcase full as he cleaned Billy’s sample sale! He also asked if we thought they would see any kudzu…Clearly, he was in for a surprise, so were we!!!

We met in Memphis where Cedric was playing that night at a juke joint that had once been a church. The next day was full of adventure from radio shows, filming in town at basement bar, a family birthday party and culminating at a true backroads juke joint. This was just the beginning of a journey that has created a beautiful friendship and partnership with M + D , Alex, Cedric and his family.
CEDRIC BURNSIDE WEARING BILLY REID | HOLY SPRINGS MS
Fast forward to the day when the Grammy’s announced The Cedric Burnside Project was up for Blues album of the year for their self-produced album, Descendants of the Hill Country. What an incredible honor! When they called us to tell us the exciting news, we wondered what they were going to wear for the ceremony. Immediately, we thought of Billy. After a phone call to Billy and Shelly Colvin who is his artist relations / music liaison and a really good friend of Mary Clayton’s, they so generously agreed to dress Cedric for the night. Additionally, Natalie Chanin, owner of Alabama Chanin also so kindly agreed to loan Mona one of her pieces for the ceremony.
Back on the road again, Florence here we come! M+D had been asked to film and document Emily Duff recording her new album at FAME Studios, which was an incredible experience and a story in itself, so we timed Cedric and Mona’s fitting while we were going to already be there. We all ventured into his flagship store on Court Street and as soon as Billy and Cedric met it was just magic. FACT: Billy is almost as much of a music aficionado as he is a clothing designer. His Shindigs have introduced us to so many incredible bands and artists. So, he seemed as excited to meet Cedric as Cedric did to meet him.

Upon getting Cedric measurements beforehand, Billy realized they were about the same size. So, he reached into his archives to find something really special for this Grammy look that he had designed for himself! The afternoon light was pouring in and it really was just a special interaction going on in front us. At one point, someone handed Cedric a glass of champagne and he said “I don't normally drink champagne, but I am going to do it, now seems like the right time!”. He was belting out “Moving on up” and everyone was having a great time. The fitting was done, Cedric looked amazing in this incredible ensemble and Billy went back to work. As we were about to leave Cedric mentioned something about having his guitar in the car.
Well, the next thing you know Cedric and Paul are strumming and singing…turns out Cedric had two guitars. Soon after, Billy appears with a bottle of bourbon and his own guitar. The three of them played for the rest of the afternoon. It was honestly one of the most fun and dreamy days!
A few days later, Shelly called to see if they could use Paul’s photographs for Billy’s online journal. Check out the link:
